State and National Parks Near Swansboro

Bear Island, just 3 short miles from Swansboro, is one the last vestiges of pristine beaches left on the East Coast. Hammonds State Park’s highly restricted access (accessible by only private boat or ferry) makes this immaculate waterfront a local favorite. With 3.5 miles of unadulterated and non-commercial beaches, it’s not surprising the loggerhead sea turtle also calls this island home.

Keeping Swansboro Natural

Although the progressive town government works to bring growth to the community their focus is also on the preservation of the natural resources.  Such as Bear Island (mentioned above) and Huggins Island, which you can see from historic, downtown Swansboro.  Huggins Island is one of the last and largest remaining maritime forests - a rare and beautiful piece of land with many large oak trees. Ocean oak trees? Yes, and, the river that runs just north of Swansboro, White Oak River, most likely was named after these trees.
